MERRY RIANA

WINNER OF NANYANG OUTSTANDING YOUNG ALUMNI AWARD 2006

We are honored that one of our alumni from the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering has won the Nanyang Alumni Awards 2006.

Merry Riana has been conferred the Nanyang Outstanding Young Alumni Award by our NTU President, Dr Su Guaning.

This award is presented to Merry, as our young alumna, who has gained national standing due to the significant contributions made in her profession, bringing honor and distinction to the University.

Merry received the award from Mr Gan Kim Yong, Minister of State for Education and Manpower at the “NTU Alumni Night 2006 – ConnectNANYANG” on Sunday, 17 December 2006 at the Nanyang Auditorium, NTU. About 1,800 alumni as well as other guests attended this event.

Merry graduated from our school of EEE in the year 2002, majoring in Communications, with a Second Upper Honors.

We are privileged to be able to conduct this interview with her for this current issue of E Cube.

Merry Riana is a young millionaire, successful entrepreneur, best-selling author, dynamic trainer, and popular media personality.

At her current age of 26, Merry has achieved many successes that a lot of people twice her age have never even attempted to do. She has won many awards and broke industry record time and time again.

In just a short period of around 4 years after her graduation, Merry has earned more than S$1,000,000 through her business. Within the last 2 years, Merry has grown her Organization, Merry Riana Organization (MRO), to a size of more than 40 people. All its members are outstanding young individuals who believed in her vision and have been working together with her to achieve their common dreams together ever since.

In her Organization, all of its 40 members are young and dynamic individuals, which all fall below the age of 30 years old. Many of them are graduates from Nanyang Technological University who joined MRO immediately after their graduation.

Quality relationship is seen in Merry’s style of personal mentorship through a comment made by the top manager in her team, Joanne Chen (NTU Bachelor of Accountancy 2003), “Merry always has a smile on her face and she is always there whenever I need her. She is my dearest mentor and manager.”

Merry’s strong belief that success is not an individual effort but a well-coordinated team endeavor has also been a contributing factor to spurring her even more towards grooming her people to success. Kelvin Cheong, (NTU Bachelor of Computer Engineering 2004) supported this fact, “I am indeed very fortunate to belong to Merry Riana Organization and be led by such a charming, caring, and determined Chairlady. I am sure my journey here would be enriching and fulfilling, with Merry as my personal mentor to guide me and push me to greater heights.”

Merry always passes down all her skills, knowledge, and experience to her people. As Julie Yu (NTU Master of Science 2006) said, “I am very lucky to have such a successful young entrepreneur, like Merry, as my personal mentor. Being directed by her, I believe I will definitely be successful in my life. I really appreciate her for helping, encouraging, and showing me the way to build my career.”

In July 2006, Merry successfully published her first book “A Gift From A Friend” which subsequently made its way into the Best-Seller list in the major bookstores in Singapore. Currently, “A Gift From A Friend” is being translated into its Mandarin and Malay version to reach out to the regional market, such as Malaysia and Indonesia.

Merry is also well-known as one of the most powerful and dynamic trainers in Singapore. Over the last 4 years, she has motivated and trained thousands of professionals, managers, executives, business owners, salespeople, and students in areas like Entrepreneurship, Strategic Marketing and Sales, Motivation, Presentation and Communication Skills, among other areas.

Merry has been featured regularly in many media like the newspaper such as The Straits Times, and magazines such as Your Choice, Career Central, and Cleo. She has also been interviewed on-air by WARNA 94.2FM and Radio Singapore International about her successes and achievements which she has reached in such a short period of time, around 4 years after her graduation from Nanyang Technological University.

Aligned with Merry’s commitment to contribute back to society, she has pioneered two non-profit projects, Project: A Gift From A Friend and Personal Mentorship Experience.

Project: A Gift From A Friend was initiated following the success of Merry’s book in making its way into the Best-Seller list. She pledged to contribute complimentary copies of her book to any institutions/schools/clubs/etc that support her Organization’s cause of Youth Entrepreneurship. For every copy of her book that is sold in the bookstores, she will contribute one complimentary copy back to the society.

As of today, Merry, through her Organization, has contributed complimentary copies of her book to SMU Ventures, SMU Indonesian Community, TOUCH Youth Services, Tarumanagara University ( Indonesia), and Young Entrepreneur Society, among others.

In her Personal Mentorship Experience program, Merry sets aside 2-hours of her precious time every week to mentor any young individual, aged 20-30 years old, who wants to take charge of their lives and live their dreams.
