MERRY MENTOR
A blank piece of paper and a pencil may be two insignificant everyday items, but they are indispensable instruments that help render everybody’s dreams, as Merry Riana demonstrates regularly. Jovel Ong finds out more.
Merry Riana is a 25 year old entrepreneur who juggles a successful career in insurance sales and her own training and consultancy, Merry Riana Organization, which she founded in 2004. She also helps young people develop individual growth by means of a self initiated mentorship programme called Personal Mentorship Experience (PME). And it is in her PME sessions that Merry gets the aspiring to wield a pencil and shape their visions of successes through spontaneous sketches on paper. This is how the young entrepreneur leads people who are unsure of themselves and their future to start thinking about realizing their dreams.
For two hours every week, Merry makes time for leading PME sessions with the young and aspiring to determine and work out their dreams under her mentorship. It is the passion in helping young people, especially those below 30 years of age, achieve their dreams that led her to initiate the programme. As a mentor, Merry guides the individuals she meets by helping them draw the link between their perceived ideals and reality, and show them how to make the next step.
I tell them what the reality is, but it’s up to them to change something about it. It can be their job or goal. They have to understand they cannot achieve their visions without working towards them, Merry says. She adds that she only plays a mentoring role
