BRAINFOOD

Hers is a business success story that will give hope to all budding entrepreneurs out there.

Ms Merry Riana may only be 26 years old, but the Indonesian is already a multi-millionairess, heads her own insurance firm and now, she is a best-selling author in Singapore too.

Her new book, A Gift From A Friend, is an inspirational tale of her journey from university into the business world. But it was not always smooth-sailing.

After earning her engineering degree from the Nanyang Technological University (NTU), she was faced with a $40,000 study loan debt, and instead of applying for a regular 9-to-6 job, she decided to turn to insurance sales right away.

Her choice, while risky at the time, eventually paid off. In her book, she talks about one characteristic that all entrepreneurs, budding or experienced, must have – courage.

She relates her fears when venturing out into an industry unknown to her, but how – with the support from family, friends and business contacts – she developed a hunger for success that helped her earn $250,000 in just her first year alone.

Using simple language and short stories to illustrate her point, Merry insists there is no better time to take charge of your life and achieve your dreams. Above all, she talks about “opportunity” and how it’s important to knock on the right door, and not be tempted to grab the first job offer that comes your way after graduation.

If you’re still not convinced, an added incentive to pick up the book is to get details on how to apply for a personal, two-hour mentorship session with Merry herself.

A Gift From A Friend is now on sale at all major bookstores at $12.90.
